Picture 1 of Absynth

Absynth 6.1.0 is a hybrid synthesizer that combines subtractive, FM, wavetable, and granular synthesis in one package. It runs as a 64-bit plugin in VST3, AU, and AAX hosts on macOS 14, 15, or 26, and it supports both Apple Silicon and Intel Macs.

Does Absynth 6 support MPE?

  • Is it MPE compatible? Yes, Absynth 6 supports full MPE and polyphonic aftertouch, which is useful if you play a controller like the ROLI Seaboard.
  • What kind of sounds can I make? The Sound Mutator lets you blend characteristics of different sounds, and the preset browser includes 250 new presets to start from.
  • Does it support surround sound? Absynth 6 adds support for up to eight-channel surround formats, so you can place sounds in a wider field.

What the semi-modular engine sounds like

The semi-modular architecture means you can route signals freely between the oscillators, filters, and effects. That flexibility is why Absynth has been a favorite for cinematic textures and evolving pads. The interface is clear, though it rewards a patient afternoon of exploration. If you are coming from an older version, the layout will feel familiar, but the new presets and surround options give you fresh ground to cover.

Starting with 250 new presets

I often start a session by opening the preset browser and scrolling through the 250 new presets. It is a good way to hear what the engine can do without committing to a patch yet. For teaching sound design, I might pick a preset called something like "Wide Horizon" and then use the Sound Mutator to blend it with a second preset. The mutator lets you pull characteristics from two different sounds, which is a quick way to discover something you would not have built from scratch.

From there, I route the sound through the Aetherizer effect. The Aetherizer is a reverb-based effect that stretches sounds into long, evolving textures. If I am working on a film score pad, I will set the Aetherizer to a slow decay and then layer a second oscillator tuned an octave down. The semi-modular routing lets me send the second oscillator through a separate filter chain, so I can keep the low end warm while the high frequencies shimmer.

When I need a rhythmic element, I switch to granular synthesis mode. Absynth's granular engine can chop a sample into grains and scatter them across the stereo field. I adjust the grain size and density until the sound pulses at the tempo I want. Then I add the Supercomb filter, which creates comb filtering effects that can sound metallic or resonant, depending on the settings.

For surround work, I set up a Quadraphonic or 5.1 template in my DAW. Absynth 6 lets you pan individual oscillators and effects across the eight channels. I will place a drone sound in the rear channels and a melody in the front, so the listener feels surrounded by the music.

Preset browser search saves time

Absynth 6 has a few features that are not flashy but save time once you know them. The preset browser includes a search function, so you can type a keyword like "pad" or "bass" and get a filtered list. That is faster than scrolling through hundreds of patches.

Polyphonic aftertouch is another detail that matters if your keyboard supports it. When you press harder on a held note, the sound changes in real time. It makes performances feel more expressive without needing extra controllers.

The Cloud Filter is easy to overlook because it is not as dramatic as the Aetherizer. But it works well for smoothing out harsh frequencies. I use it on bright leads to take off the edge before the sound hits the master effects.

Each of the four synthesis types—subtractive, FM, wavetable, and granular—has its own oscillator section. Switching between them is a single click, so you can audition different sound sources without rebuilding the patch. That is convenient when you are experimenting and want to keep the filter and envelope settings intact.

Surround and MPE added in the latest update

Absynth 6.1.0 is the current version, and it builds on the foundation of Absynth 6. The main additions that affect daily work are the surround support and the MPE compatibility. Before version 6, you could not place sounds in more than two channels without third-party tools. Now you can set up a Quadraphonic or Octaphonic patch directly in the plugin, which is useful for film composers and electronic musicians who work with immersive audio.

Full MPE support means that controllers like the ROLI Seaboard or the LinnStrument can send per-note pitch bends, slides, and pressure data to each voice. In practice, that lets you play chords where each note vibrates or swells independently. It changes how you perform pads and leads, especially in a live setting.

The polyphonic aftertouch is also new to this version. If your keyboard sends aftertouch per note rather than globally, Absynth responds to each key's pressure separately. It is a subtle difference, but it makes a difference for piano-style playing.

The 250 new presets are the most immediate change. They are designed to show off the surround and MPE features, so you can load one and start experimenting rather than building from scratch. The preset browser has been updated to let you browse by category, which helps when you are looking for a specific mood.

Don't use all four synthesis types at once

The most common mistake is trying to use all four synthesis types at once. Absynth's semi-modular engine can quickly become a tangled mess of routing if you add FM, wavetable, and granular oscillators in the same patch. I recommend starting with one synthesis type and adding others only when you need a specific texture.

Another mistake is ignoring the Sound Mutator. Beginners often scroll through presets and tweak knobs, but the mutator can combine the character of two entirely different sounds. It is a shortcut to unique patches that still feel cohesive.

People also forget to check the surround routing settings when they first load a patch. A preset designed for 5.1 might sound thin in stereo because the sound is spread across channels that are not there. If a patch sounds quiet or distant, look at the surround panning before adjusting volume or EQ.

Finally, beginners sometimes skip the Cloud Filter because they do not know what it does. It is a resonant filter that can add movement and air to a sound. It is worth trying on any pad or ambient patch before moving to the more obvious effects.

Questions I keep getting

What Mac models are supported?

Absynth 6 runs on both Apple Silicon and Intel Macs, as long as you have macOS 14 or later and at least 4 GB of RAM.

Can I use Absynth with my hardware controller?

Yes, it supports full MPE and polyphonic aftertouch, so expressive controllers work well.
