Euro Truck Simulator 2: example 1

Think of Euro Truck Simulator 2 as a long-haul road trip you can start and stop whenever you want. The game puts you behind the wheel of a truck, moving cargo across Europe on real roads that stretch for thousands of kilometers. If you have ever enjoyed the quiet rhythm of a highway drive with a destination in mind, this game captures that feeling.

Delivering freight from food to machinery across 60 cities

  • Pick a job from a freight company — anything from food to machinery — and check the route on the map.
  • Drive through more than 60 European cities, passing landmarks like the Eiffel Tower or the Colosseum as you go.
  • Pull into rest stops, refuel, and sleep at your own pace.
  • Customize your truck: upgrade engines, change paint jobs, swap wheels, or tweak the interior.
  • Watch for road signs and speed limits; the game uses real road networks, so navigation matters.

Why it works as a slow hobby

There is no timer pushing you. You can take a job from Hamburg to Milan and spend an evening driving through Germany, Switzerland, and Italy. The new version adds a Proximity Exploration feature that reveals the area around your truck as you drive, so you always know a bit of what is ahead. If you want a game that respects your time and lets you unwind, this one delivers.

Running a music player or podcast app alongside the game

Euro Truck Simulator 2 is a self-contained program, but it works well alongside a few everyday Mac tools. Because the game uses keyboard and mouse input by default, you can easily run a music player or a podcast app in the background. The game only uses music accompaniment for its voice language, so your own playlist or an audiobook does not clash with in-game dialogue.

The game does not require an internet connection once installed, so you can play offline without interruptions. If you like taking notes for your trucking company — tracking which garages earn the most or which drivers need training — Notes or a simple text editor stays quietly open.

The game launches from Launchpad after you copy it to Applications, and it runs in a standard window. You can switch between it and other apps with Command+Tab without the game pausing. That is handy for checking email or replying to a message during a long straight stretch of highway.

Starting from my Hamburg garage for a Sunday drive to the south of France

I start a session on a Sunday afternoon. I have an hour or two free, and I want to drive from my home garage in Hamburg down to the south of France.

  1. I open the game from Launchpad. The main menu shows my current company profile: one truck, one garage, a small fleet of hired drivers.
  2. I check the job market. A freight company in Hamburg needs a load of machinery delivered to Lyon. The route is about 1,200 kilometers. I accept.
  3. I walk to my truck in the garage. I check the fuel gauge and tire condition through the vehicle menu. Everything looks fine, so I start the engine.
  4. I pull out of the garage and follow the GPS directions out of Hamburg. The Proximity Exploration feature reveals the streets and landmarks around me as I drive, so I always know where the next turn is.
  5. I drive through Germany, then into Switzerland. I stop at a rest area near Basel to refuel and sleep. The game saves automatically at rest stops, so I do not worry about losing progress.
  6. I cross into France and follow the A6 toward Lyon. The scenery changes: hills, vineyards, small towns. I pass a few famous landmarks in Lyon, like the Basilica of Notre-Dame de Fourvière, visible from the highway.
  7. I reach the delivery point in Lyon. I back the truck into the loading bay and complete the job. The payment goes into my company account.
  8. Back at the main menu, I check my company finances. I hire a new driver and assign them a truck.
  9. I save and quit. No rush.

A 64-bit installer with no online activation needed

The game runs on Intel Macs. It is a 64-bit application, so it works on macOS versions that support 64-bit apps. You do not need to activate it online or log into an account. The installer is straightforward: mount the disk image, drag the game to Applications, and launch from Launchpad.

The game supports 22 languages, including English, German, French, Spanish, Polish, Japanese, and Simplified Chinese. The interface and menus use whichever language you choose. Voice is limited to music accompaniment, so you will hear engine sounds and ambient audio but no spoken dialogue or route instructions.

Because the game is from 2012, it does not use modern graphics features like ray tracing or Metal 3. That is fine — it runs on hardware that is a few years old without problems. The game updates to version 1.61.1.1s add new trucks, trailer reworks, and the Proximity Exploration feature, but the core performance profile stays the same.

Lowering steering sensitivity to avoid twitchy mouse control

The default keyboard layout works for basic driving, but I suggest a few adjustments before your first long trip:

  • Set the steering sensitivity to a lower value. The default can feel twitchy with a mouse. Lower sensitivity makes highway driving smoother.
  • Adjust the automatic transmission behavior. You can set it to "real automatic" (the truck shifts itself) or "sequential" (you shift with buttons). I prefer real automatic for relaxed driving.
  • Turn on the Proximity Exploration feature if it is not enabled. It adds a small radius of revealed map around your truck, which helps with navigation.
  • Remap the parking brake to a convenient key. The default key is spacebar, but I find it easier to use a nearby letter key like B.
  • Set the game window to a resolution that matches your Mac's display. The game supports 16:9 and 16:10 aspect ratios, so fullscreen mode works well on most Macs.

These changes take two minutes and make the game feel more natural for casual long-distance driving.

Questions I keep getting

Can I play Euro Truck Simulator 2 on an Intel Mac?

Yes, the tested architecture is 64-bit Intel, so it runs on most Macs from the last several years.

What is new in the current version?

The update adds the Volvo FH Series 6 100 Year Edition, a reworked Livestock Trailer, an Improved Material System for selected trucks, and a Proximity Exploration feature that reveals the map around your vehicle.

How to install

  1. Mount the downloaded disk image.
  2. Drag the game to the Applications folder alias.
  3. After copying finishes, launch the game from Launchpad.
