Software Inc: example 1

When you start a new game, the first thing you do is customize your avatar — a small step, but it sets the tone. Then you pick an empty office space and begin furnishing rooms: desks for developers, a break area, maybe a few plants to keep morale up. You hire employees with specific roles — design, development, support, research, sales — and assign a leader to coordinate each team. The leader manages subordinates, keeps projects on track, and handles the day-to-day decisions.

  1. Hire staff — Pick from candidates with different skills. Developers write code, designers create interfaces, salespeople pitch to clients.
  2. Furnish the office — Place desks, chairs, whiteboards, and even a coffee machine. Maintenance staff will fix broken furniture and clean rooms.
  3. Start a project — Choose to create a new software product, sign a contract, or sell shares. You can build a franchise or a single program.
  4. Manage development — Assign leaders to coordinate tasks. Watch employee relationships — happy teams work faster.
  5. Ship and sell — Release your product, handle support tickets, and decide when to expand your office or hire more people.

The loop repeats: hire, build, manage, release. You can also buy competitors, license your technology, or focus on a single hit product. It is a strategy simulation that combines office construction, staff management, and software development into one slow-burn puzzle.

Runs on both Apple Silicon and Intel Macs

The game is built for both Apple Silicon and Intel Macs, so it runs on the full range of modern machines. You open a disk image, drag the app into your Applications folder, and launch it from Launchpad. No extra installers or store accounts needed.

The interface is in English only. Music plays in the background as you manage your company. Because this is an early-access title, you will see occasional updates like the Beta 1.8.41 patch notes on the developer's Steam announcements. Each update brings balance changes and new features — the game is still being shaped.

Early access means some parts of the simulation may feel unfinished. The developer, Coredumping, has been updating since 2015, so the foundation is solid. But you should expect the kind of rough edges you get with any game that is still in development.

How to open a disk image that macOS doesn't recognize

People run into a few predictable issues when they start. Here is what I see most often and how to work around them.

  • The disk image does not open — macOS may treat the file as unrecognized. Right-click it and choose "Open with" then "Disk Image Mounter". If that does not appear, double-clicking the .iso or .img file usually works. On older macOS versions, you may need to use the "Mount" option in the Finder menu.
  • The app does not appear in Launchpad — After dragging the app into the Applications folder, wait for the copy to finish. Then open Launchpad and type the game name. If it does not show up, navigate to the Applications folder in Finder and double-click the game manually. It will launch without issue.
  • Employees seem unhappy or unproductive — Check that you have assigned a leader to each team. Leaders coordinate development and keep subordinates on task. Without a leader, employees drift. Also ensure you have hired maintenance staff to repair broken furniture and clean rooms — messy offices lower morale.
  • The office feels cramped with only one floor — You can build up to ten floors, including basement areas. Use the construction menu to add levels. Roads and parking lots can also be placed to make your building feel like a real campus.
  • Projects stall or fail to ship — You need enough developers and designers assigned to the project. If you are short on staff, the work will crawl. Hire more people or reduce the scope of your product. Selling shares or signing contracts can bring in cash to fund extra hires.

Why hiring too few people too early hurts your company

I have watched several students in my game club start their first company, and they all hit the same traps. Here are the ones to avoid.

Hiring too few people too early. A common beginner move is to hire one developer and one designer, then wonder why nothing ships. You need a small team even for a basic product. Hire at least two developers and one designer from the start. Assign a leader to keep them coordinated.

Ignoring employee relationships. The game tracks how staff get along. If you cram everyone into a single room with no break area or plants, they will become unhappy. Put a few decorative items in the office. Hire maintenance staff early so the space stays clean. Happy teams finish projects faster.

Neglecting the online store. You can create an online store and launch servers to support your development. Beginners often skip this step entirely. Without a store, you cannot sell your software directly. Set it up as soon as you have a product to ship.

Building too high too fast. Adding multiple floors sounds exciting, but each level needs furniture, staff, and maintenance. Start with one or two floors. Expand only when your current space feels genuinely crowded. A ten-floor office with empty rooms looks impressive but costs money without generating anything.

Forgetting about support. Once you sell a product, support tickets arrive. If you have no support staff, the tickets pile up and customer satisfaction drops. Hire at least one support employee before your first release. You can always add more as your catalog grows.

Sticking to one product type. Beginners sometimes create a single program and try to sell it forever. The market changes. You can create franchises, sign contracts, sell shares, or license technology. Diversify your revenue sources so a single flop does not sink your company.
