The Sims 4: example 1

The Sims 4 runs on both Intel and Apple Silicon Macs, including the MacBook Air M1, so it works on most modern machines. Here is a quick look at what you actually do minute to minute inside the game.

Create a Sim

You choose a Sim’s appearance, traits, and outfits. Every choice shapes how they react to the world.

Build a home

Walls, furniture, and landscaping. You can build from scratch or move into a pre-built house.

Direct daily life

Follow your Sims through their day. They eat, sleep, go to work, and do hobbies. You choose what they do next.

Build relationships and careers

Sims make friends, fall in love, and start families. They also pursue jobs, from scientist to chef, and work toward promotions and life goals.

A full household workflow from start to finish

Let me walk you through a typical session where you create a single Sim, build a small home, and get them started on a career. This covers the core loop most players return to again and again.

  1. Open the game and start a new household. From the main menu, choose New Game. You will be asked to pick a world to live in. For a first run, Willow Creek works well because its lots are small and easy to furnish on a limited budget. You can change worlds later, so do not worry too much about the choice now.
  2. Create your Sim. Spend time in Create-a-Sim. Pick a base look, then adjust facial features, body shape, and skin tone. Choose a voice pitch and a walk style. Select three personality traits such as Cheerful, Ambitious, or Loves the Outdoors. These traits affect how your Sim behaves on their own and which interactions they enjoy. Pick an aspiration early: for example, the Musical Genius aspiration gives your Sim a long-term goal and unlocks special rewards as they complete milestones.
  3. Pick a lot and build a basic house. Once you exit Create-a-Sim, you land in the neighborhood view. Click an empty lot and choose Build Mode. Start with a simple rectangular room 5 by 6 tiles wide. Add a door, a few windows, and a roof. Inside, place a bed, a refrigerator, a toilet, a shower, and a cheap counter. This is enough to keep your Sim fed, rested, and clean. Leave a little money in the household budget for bills and skill-building items such as a bookshelf or a cheap mirror.
  4. Direct your Sim’s first day. Switch to Live Mode. Your Sim will have some immediate needs: hunger, bladder, social, and energy. Click them and select interactions that fill those bars. Cook a meal, use the toilet, chat with a neighbor who walks by, and then sleep when tired. The game will guide you with a few early tutorial pop-ups.
  5. Start a career. Click the phone or the computer and select Find a Job. Choose a career that matches your Sim’s traits. An Ambitious Sim benefits from the Business career, for example. Then follow the daily work schedule. Perform daily tasks such as increasing a relevant skill to get promotions faster.
  6. Earn satisfaction points and work toward the aspiration. Each aspiration has four stages. Complete small goals, such as reading three skill books or reaching level 4 of a skill. Every completed milestone gives you satisfaction points you can spend on rewards like the Steel Bladder trait, which makes your Sim need the toilet less often.

This whole loop takes about an hour in real time, but you can save at any point and return later.

How my students' most common patterns trip them up

I see the same patterns in my game club when students first pick up The Sims 4. Here are the most common ones and how to avoid them.

Overbuilding early

New players often build a huge, detailed house in Build Mode and run out of money before they have placed a bed or a refrigerator. The result is a Sim who cannot sleep or eat, which sends their mood into a spiral. Start small and expand only after your Sim has a steady job and some savings.

Ignoring needs until they turn red

The need bars turn from green to yellow to red if you neglect them. A Sim with red needs gets tense, performs poorly at work, and may refuse to do what you ask. Check the panel at the bottom of the screen every few minutes. Address yellow bars before they become red.

Picking incompatible traits and careers

If you choose the Lazy trait and then put your Sim in the Athletic career, they will struggle to perform the daily tasks because exercising conflicts with their nature. Read the trait descriptions when you create your Sim. Pair traits with careers that share the same skills: for example, a Sim who is Creative and a Gloomy type works well in the Writer career.

Not saving before major events

Weddings, public outings, and career milestones can trigger glitches if your game has been running for a while. Save before you trigger any major event. Use the Save As option so you keep a backup in case something goes wrong, such as a Sim getting stuck in the world.

Changes I make in the Options menu before playing seriously

When you first load into the game, open the Options menu from the main screen or from the pause menu. These are the few changes I always make before I start playing seriously. The game does not name these exactly this way in the menu, but the logic holds.

  • Turn on autosave with a short interval. The game can freeze during long sessions. You find this option in the Gameplay settings tab.
  • Disable the camera shake. The default camera wobbles when a Sim walks past. That is distracting during building and during fast-paced social events. Look for a Camera setting and turn the shake off completely.
  • Enable testing cheats. This is not for cheating per se. Activating the cheat console (press Command + Shift + C and type testingcheats true) lets you access a few quality-of-life commands, like resetting a Sim who gets stuck in an animation loop. It does not break achievements or progression. I consider it a safety net.
  • Set the game speed to normal. The game offers three speed settings: normal, fast, and very fast. Many new players leave it on very fast and then miss important notifications about their Sim’s needs or career events. Keep it on normal during the first few hours until you understand the rhythm of the day cycle.

What version 1.127.41.1030 improved for daily use

Version 1.127.41.1030, which came out in 2026, made a few specific improvements that affect how you experience the game day to day.

Marketplace browsing is faster

You can now flick through the gallery of community creations, such as lots and Sims, with less waiting. The thumbnails load in a batch rather than one at a time. This is helpful if you are building a household quickly and want inspiration from other players’ builds.

Marketplace images are cached after the first download

If you look at a community creation on one day and return to it later, the images load from your computer’s cache instead of downloading again. That speeds up repeated browsing, especially if you revisit the same creator’s gallery often. It also makes the neighborhood view feel snappier after the first session.

Bug fixes

The update included a round of bug fixes that addressed a few small issues. I have not seen every fix listed, but the general reliability of the gallery and the game’s response to buying items from the Market improved.

How to fix the loading hang and the stuck–in–build snag

The game freezes on the initial splash screen

This happens sometimes after a fresh install. The cause is usually a corrupt configuration file in your Documents folder. Close the game, open File Explorer, go to Documents > Electronic Arts > The Sims 4. Move the entire folder to your desktop as a backup. Then restart the game. It will generate a clean folder. You can then copy back your Tray, Saves, and Mods folders if you had them. Do not copy back the whole folder or the problem may return.

The language is wrong when you first launch

The game uses the system language by default. If you want a different language, open the EA app first without the DLC unlocker tool active. Find the game in your library, right-click or open the properties, locate the language setting, and pick your language from the list that includes English, German, Russian, French, Spanish, Italian, Dutch, Polish, Portuguese, Finnish, Danish, Swedish, Czech, Korean, Japanese, Traditional Chinese, and Simplified Chinese. Save the change, close the window, and click Update. The game will re-download a small language pack. After that, you can launch the game and the menus will show your chosen language.

Downloaded DLC does not appear in the game

If you downloaded extra content packs and they do not show up, you may have skipped the EA DLC Unlocker step. Download the unlocker tool and read its instructions carefully. The order matters: you need to apply the unlocker before you open the game. Also make sure the DLC files are placed in the correct folder. The instructions tell you where exactly. If you already launched the game without the unlocker, close it, apply the unlocker, and relaunch.

A Sim gets stuck and does not move

This can happen on stairs, in front of objects, or during group interactions. Open the cheat console with Command + Shift + C, type testingcheats true, press Enter, then type resetSim YourSimFirstName YourSimLastName. Press Enter again. The Sim will pop back to the home lot and resume normal behavior. This is the fastest fix and does not require restarting the game.

Each Sim has a set of aspirations. Completing them unlocks rewards and changes how the game feels.

Questions I keep getting

Can I change the language in The Sims 4?

Yes. Open the EA App without the DLC Unlocker, go to the game properties, find the language setting, and pick from 17 languages including English, German, Spanish, French, and Japanese.

Does The Sims 4 run on Intel Macs?

Yes, the build supports both ARM and 64-bit Intel Macs. It was tested on macOS Sonoma and a MacBook Air M1.

What should I do if the game freezes on the splash screen?

Clean the The Sims 4 folder in Documents. Keep only the Tray, Saves, and Mods folders if you need your saved data.

How to install

  1. Download EA DLC Unlocker.
  2. Read the included instructions for EA DLC Unlocker.
  3. Download the DLC add-ons as separate files or as one file.
  4. Open EA App without the DLC Unlocker to change the language.
  5. In the game properties, find the language setting and select the desired language.
  6. Save the change, close the window, then click Update to refresh the game.
  7. After the download finishes, launch the game.
  8. If the game freezes on the initial splash screen, clean the The Sims 4 folder in Documents and keep only Tray, Saves, and Mods if needed.
