Every portrait has that one thing you wish weren't there — a stray blemish, a wrinkle, a shine. Beauty Box Photo handles those automatically. It is a retouching plug-in from Digital Anarchy that smooths skin and removes imperfections without turning the face into plastic.

Select the skin tone range to avoid hair and background

  • Skin tone selection — picks the range of skin to treat, so the effect stays on the face and off the hair or background.
  • Smoothing amount — dials in how soft the skin becomes. Low settings take the edge off; higher ones go full glamour.
  • Detail recovery — brings back the texture around eyes, lips, and brows. This is what keeps the portrait looking like a person.

Run it as a Photoshop filter that keeps facial details sharp

You run it as a filter inside Photoshop. The plugin analyzes the image, masks the skin, and applies its smoothing. The result keeps facial details sharp while removing blemishes and wrinkles. It supports both ARM and x86 64-bit Macs, so it runs on current Apple Silicon machines and older Intel models alike.

My first session with it

I opened a headshot from a school play. The lighting was harsh, and one student had a healing scrape near the chin. I opened the image in Photoshop and launched Beauty Box Photo from the filter menu.

The plugin scanned the image and automatically detected the skin area. It marked it with a colored overlay. I could see instantly what the software considered skin and what it ignored — the hair, the dark background, the shirt collar. With the skin tone selection control set to its default, I had a clean mask in one step.

I moved the smoothing amount slider to about 35 percent for the first pass. The scrape vanished, and the skin looked softer. But the eyes and brows were still crisp — the detail recovery slider was already working in the background. I nudged detail recovery up slightly to make sure the eyelashes kept their definition. The whole adjustment took under two minutes.

For a second image, a group shot with five faces, I used the same approach. The plugin handled different skin tones in one pass. The real-time rendering meant I could see each adjustment as I moved the sliders — no waiting for a preview to reload.

Start with a familiar portrait at default settings for a baseline

Start with a portrait you know well — one where you remember exactly how the skin looked. Run Beauty Box Photo at default settings first. That gives you a baseline to compare against. Then make small changes: lower the smoothing amount and increase detail recovery to see the sweet spot for natural-looking skin.

Work on a duplicate layer in Photoshop. That way you can toggle the effect on and off and see the difference. It also protects your original image. When you find settings that work for a particular lighting situation or skin type, write them down. I keep a small note in my desktop folder with three typical setups: one for portraits shot outdoors, one for studio lighting, one for casual indoor shots.

For the first week, use the plugin on every portrait you edit. You learn its behavior faster by applying it to different images than by reading about it. Pay attention to where it keeps detail and where it smooths too much — that tells you how to adjust the detail recovery slider for your style.

Preview which areas the plugin will treat with the skin overlay

The skin overlay preview is one of those features you might miss on the first run. It shows exactly which areas the plugin will treat. If you see a highlight on the background or on clothing, you can adjust the skin tone selection until the overlay matches only the face.

The plugin processes in real time. Every slider movement updates the preview immediately. That matters when you are comparing two amounts of smoothing side by side. You can slide back and forth and see the change without waiting for a separate render.

Beauty Box Photo works with both the original Photoshop and Photoshop Elements. For those of us running the school license on Elements, that is a welcome compatibility point. The plugin also respects the layer structure in Photoshop, so you can apply it on a smart object and change your settings later.

Reduce smoothing to 25% and raise detail recovery to 70%

On a fresh install, I reduce the smoothing amount to 25 percent. The default is often too strong for everyday portraits. Then I raise detail recovery to about 70 percent. That combination keeps skin texture visible while removing blemishes. I leave skin tone selection at auto initially — it gets the mask right for most faces in my portraits.

For group shots with multiple skin tones, I sometimes switch the skin tone selection to a tighter range and apply a second pass on specific faces. That is a manual step, but it keeps the treatment even across the group. The real-time preview helps here because I can check each face before committing.

I also recommend saving a preset after you find a combination you like. Beauty Box Photo remembers the last used settings, but if you switch between different kinds of portraits often, a saved preset saves you from dialing in the same numbers each time. The beauty box torrent download comes with the plugin ready to use, so adjusting these settings is the first thing I do after installation.
