The current version, 2.2.3, is an update to Element 3D V2.2. It is labeled as a 3D object based particle plug-in and as a fast Open GL 3D rendering engine. The improved engine handles both objects and particles more efficiently.

  • Import OBJ files directly into Adobe After Effects without a separate 3D app.
  • Use 3D Object Groups control for replicator settings and specified 3D models.
  • Work within your usual After Effects session: tracks, buses and typical compositing jobs stay intact.
  • Render objects and particles with the updated engine for smoother playback.
  • Manage complex 3D scenes with the familiar After Effects interface.

The plug-in sits inside After Effects, so you keep your existing workflow. Import a model, adjust replicator groups, and render without switching programs. For a classroom or studio, that means less context switching and more time on the final shot.

Works inside After Effects without a separate 3D app

Element 3D suits different Mac users in different ways, but a few groups find it especially useful. Motion graphics artists who work inside After Effects every day are the obvious fit — they can add 3D geometry without learning a dedicated 3D application. If you already know how to keyframe, mask and composite in After Effects, the plug-in keeps you in that world.

Visual effects artists also benefit. A single OBJ import can turn into a crowd of objects, and the particle array system means you can scatter debris, sparks or other elements across a shot. For someone doing title sequences, product visualizations or broadcast graphics, that speed matters more than raw polygon counts.

Teachers and club leaders like me find it useful for demonstrating how 3D layers interact with 2D footage. Students can see the result in the same timeline where they are cutting and compositing. It keeps the lesson focused on the effect, not on switching to a separate 3D package.

Casual users who only need an occasional 3D element — a logo extrusion, a rotating object behind a title — will appreciate that they do not need to learn a full 3D suite. The trade-off is that Element 3D is not a modeling tool. You bring your own OBJ files from elsewhere, like Cinema 4D or Blender, then arrange them inside After Effects.

Runs on Intel Macs and needs OBJ files

A few other options exist for adding 3D inside After Effects on a Mac, each with a different approach.

Element 3D versus cineware

Cineware is the direct Cinema 4D integration inside After Effects. It reads C4D files natively and lets you adjust lights, cameras and some materials. The difference is that Cineware expects you to build the 3D scene in Cinema 4D. If you already own Cinema 4D and work in it often, Cineware makes sense. Element 3D, by contrast, does not require a separate 3D app for scene building. You import ready-made models and work with them inside the plug-in’s own controls. Cineware is also heavier if you only want scattered particles or simple geometry replication.

Element 3D versus particular

Particular is a particle system for After Effects, also from a third-party developer. It excels at organic particle effects like smoke, fire and flowing lines. But Particular does not handle imported 3D objects. You can generate particles from layers, but those layers remain 2D. Element 3D’s particle array uses actual 3D geometry. If your project involves hundreds of 3D bottles, rocks or letters flying across the screen, Element 3D handles that natively. Particular is stronger for natural-looking particle behavior without the rendering overhead of 3D models.

Element 3D versus trapcode form

Form is another Trapcode tool that creates 3D particle grids and surfaces. You can map layers onto a grid and get a 3D appearance. But Form does not import OBJ files. Its particles are sprites or layers, not real geometry. Element 3D gives you actual 3D objects with depth and proper shading. Form is lighter for abstract motion backgrounds; Element 3D is better when you need recognizable 3D shapes.

A workflow: building a 3D logo reveal

This walkthrough assumes you have a cleaned OBJ file of a logo ready. The same steps apply to any 3D object you want to place in a scene.

  1. Go to Effects & Presets, apply the Element 3D effect to a new solid layer. Open the effect controls and click the Scene Setup button.
  2. Load the model. In Scene Setup, use the Import button to load your OBJ file. The model appears in the 3D viewport. You can rotate the view to inspect it.
  3. Set up 3D Object Groups. In the same window, assign the imported model to one of the five 3D Object Groups. This group is what you control later in the timeline. You can also adjust replicator settings here if you want multiple copies.
  4. Adjust materials and lights. Inside Scene Setup, tweak the material properties — roughness, metalness, color — and add a few lights. The OpenGL preview updates quickly so you can check the look.
  5. Animate in the timeline. Close Scene Setup. Back in After Effects, you see the solid layer with the 3D object. Use the Element 3D effect controls to keyframe position, rotation and scale. The particle system is also available here if you want to clone the logo into a swarm.
  6. Composite with footage. Place your background footage below the solid layer. The 3D object sits on top. You can add shadows, reflections or depth of field using additional effects or by adjusting the plug-in settings.
  7. Render the composition. Since Element 3D works inside After Effects, you render normally using the Render Queue or Adobe Media Encoder. The plug-in processes the 3D pass during the render.

The whole job stays inside one After Effects project. No exporting from a 3D app, no re-importing sequences. If you need to adjust the model, you go back to Scene Setup and the changes apply to all keyframed instances.

Motion graphics artists add 3D geometry directly

Does Element 3D work on an Intel Mac?
Yes. The current version 2.2.3 is built for Intel architecture. The plug-in functions within After Effects on any Intel-based Mac that meets Adobe’s system requirements.

Why do I need an OBJ file? Can Element 3D create models from scratch?
Element 3D is not a modeling application. It imports existing 3D geometry. You can create OBJ files in Cinema 4D, Blender, Maya or any other 3D software that exports the OBJ format. Some users also download free or paid OBJ models from online libraries. Once imported, you can scale, rotate, replicate and texture them inside the plug-in.

What is the particle array system for?
It lets you clone a single 3D object many times, arranged in grids, spheres, cubes or random patterns. Each clone is a real 3D object. You can then animate the whole array or affect individual objects. This is useful for scenes with debris, crowds of objects, or abstract motion graphics made from repeated geometry.

Can I use Element 3D with older versions of After Effects?
The plug-in is designed for specific After Effects versions. Video Copilot lists compatible versions on their site. In general, updating both After Effects and the plug-in to current releases avoids compatibility issues.

Do I need a powerful Mac to run Element 3D?
The plug-in uses your GPU for real-time OpenGL previews. A dedicated graphics card helps when working with high-polygon models or many particles. Integrated Intel graphics can handle simpler scenes but may become slow with complex setups. Testing your typical scene size before a deadline is a sensible habit.

Element 3D for macOS users who need a full version might encounter a package named element 3d mac crack, which is simply an unauthorized release. The standard installation and activation instructions included with the package are the intended way to set up the plug-in. The help files and Scene Setup window are the same regardless of how someone obtained it.

Questions I keep getting

Does this plug-in work outside of Adobe After Effects?

No, it is specifically an Adobe After Effects plug-in from Video Copilot. It works only inside After Effects.

How to install

1. Use the included installation and activation instructions in the package. 2. Follow those instructions carefully to install and activate the plug-in correctly.
