Picture 1 of HITMAN
Sixty seconds in, you are studying a guard's patrol route through a crack in a door. That is the rhythm of HITMAN: observe, wait, then move. You control Agent 47, a contract killer dropped into sprawling, clockwork levels — a Paris fashion show, a Bangkok hotel, a Colorado militia compound. Each target has a routine, and your job is to break it. You can poison a drink, sabotage a chandelier, or slip past everyone in a waiter's uniform. The game rewards patience and creativity more than reflexes. Every hallway and balcony is a puzzle you solve by watching and listening. The macOS version from Feral Interactive runs on both Intel and Apple Silicon machines, and the current build is 1.13.2. Text is available in ten languages including English, German, Russian, and Simplified Chinese, so the classroom game club at my school often borrows it for language immersion sessions. You decide how to move, what to wear, and when to strike. The clock does not rush you.

Treating HITMAN like a shooter backfires every time

I see the same patterns every year when students first try HITMAN. The game invites experimentation, but a few habits get in the way.

Treating it like a shooter. The loud approach works briefly. You fight through a room, alarms sound, guards swarm, and the mission fails or you hide in a closet for ten minutes. The game gives you a pistol, but using it as a first resort usually ends the run early. Instead, watch where guards look and when they turn away. A silenced pistol is a tool for specific moments, not a primary weapon.

Ignoring disguises. New players grab the first uniform they see and walk past everyone. Every disguise has limits. A chef can walk through kitchens but gets stopped near security rooms. A guard can patrol most areas but other guards recognise you if you stand too close. The game tells you which areas are safe and which are suspicious — the icon at the bottom of the screen changes. Check it before you move through a door.

Rushing the first attempt. HITMAN levels are designed for replaying. The first run is reconnaissance. Walk the map, note target paths, find key items. One student spent an hour trying to reach a target through a locked door before noticing a ventilation shaft three rooms away. The game expects you to fail and try again with more information.

Leaving bodies in the open. A knocked-out guard found by a patrol triggers an alert. Drag bodies into closets, bathrooms, or behind large furniture. If you cannot hide a body quickly, make sure nobody walks that corridor for the next minute.

Apple Silicon support changes everyday play in version 1.13.2

Feral Interactive's 1.13.2 build is the version you will install. Compared to earlier releases, the most noticeable difference for everyday play is Apple Silicon support. The game runs natively on M1, M2, and M3 Macs without Rosetta translation. That means it launches faster and uses less memory than the Intel build did on the same hardware. For a classroom setup where students share a Mac, the quicker startup matters — less waiting, more playing.

The version also removed the need for an activation step. Earlier Feral ports sometimes required entering a code or connecting to a service before the game started. Version 1.13.2 does not. You install, open, and play. That simplifies things for the school game club: no lost codes, no internet requirement for students who bring older Macs without a network cable.

Language support expanded over time. The current build includes Japanese, Polish, and Portuguese alongside the original English, German, French, Italian, Spanish, Russian, and Simplified Chinese. The voice language remains English only, but subtitles and menus switch cleanly. Students learning German or French can change the text setting in the options menu and play through dialogue-heavy missions for vocabulary practice.

Will HITMAN run on your older Mac?

Will it run on an older Mac?
The game requires macOS 10.13.4 or later. Feral's FAQ lists supported Intel graphics chipsets like Iris Graphics 540, 550, 640, and 650. If your Mac shipped with one of those and runs High Sierra or newer, the game should start. For Apple Silicon Macs, any version of macOS that supports native ARM apps works with this build.

Do I need an internet connection to play?
No. Once installed, the game runs entirely offline. No always-online DRM, no login screen. You play the full missions, unlock items, and progress without connecting to any server. This is one reason I recommend it for classrooms with inconsistent wifi.

Can I save mid-mission?
Yes. HITMAN lets you save your progress at any point during a level. You can create multiple save slots. If a plan goes wrong, load the save and try a different angle. Students often save before trying a risky distraction — poison the drink, see what happens, and reload if guards spot them.

How long does a level take?
A first playthrough of a mission might take an hour. Later runs, when you know the map and target routines, can be as short as ten minutes. The game tracks your time for each attempt, so students challenge each other to complete a mission faster or with fewer items. There is no time limit during the mission itself — you can stand in a corner and watch for as long as you like.

Questions I keep getting

Does HITMAN work on Apple Silicon Macs?

Yes, version 1.13.2 supports both ARM and 64-bit Intel architectures.

What languages does the game support?

The game supports Russian, English, German, Spanish, Italian, Simplified Chinese, Polish, Portuguese, French, and Japanese text.

How to install

1. Run the standard installer package. 2. Choose an installation location when prompted. The Applications folder is recommended because it keeps the game accessible for all users on the machine.
