The current version of FotoMagico, 6.10, brings support for macOS 27 Golden Gate and drops compatibility with macOS 10.15 through 13. If you are on macOS 14 Sonoma or newer, you get the same slideshow editor that has been a classroom staple for years: arrange images, add captions, and export in any QuickTime-compatible format.

Still leans on Apple technologies and iCloud Drive

FotoMagico still leans on Apple technologies like Metal and Swift, and it runs natively on Apple Silicon. Projects can live on iCloud Drive, so a show you start on your Mac can continue on an iPad. The separate player remains handy for sharing high-resolution slideshows with computers that do not have the app, and you can limit how long a show stays viewable or how many times it opens. Export options still include iPad-ready files and a screensaver version.

6.10 fixes a crash on quit and adds macOS 27 support

Beyond the macOS 27 support, this update fixes a crash that happened when quitting the app, makes snippets match unusual stage aspect ratios more reliably, localizes some Map Assistant controls, and adds general stability improvements. For teachers running a school Mac lab, the drop of older macOS versions matters: check your system before updating.

Building a slideshow from start to finish

Here is a typical workflow for a classroom project, say a history presentation or a year-end photo recap. Start by creating a new project and dragging your images into the timeline from the Finder or Photos. Use the stage view to set a consistent order, then add text captions to individual slides for dates or names. Move on to transitions between slides: pick one from the available list and apply it to a single slide or to the whole show. Preview the result instantly in full resolution without waiting for a render. When the arrangement looks right, export the show as a QuickTime movie for screening on any school computer, or burn it to a DVD using iDVD or Roxio Toast if the classroom hardware still uses discs.

Resize, move, and combine images without leaving the editor

  • You can resize, move, rotate, zoom, and combine images within a single slide without leaving the editor. Good for comparing two photos side by side.
  • The separate player lets you set a viewing limit: a show can expire after a certain date or after being watched a set number of times. Useful for timed class assignments or one-time-only screenings.
  • Export as a screensaver works well for looping a sequence on a shared display during an open house or school event.
  • Add watermarks to protect student work before sharing it online or with parents.
  • Presets for Instagram vertical stories save time if you are preparing slideshows for social media or school announcements.

Crash on quit? Update to 6.10 on macOS 14 or newer

Snag: the app crashes on quit. The 6.10 update fixed a crash that occurred when closing FotoMagico. If you still see it, make sure you are on the latest version and that your macOS is 14 Sonoma or newer. Older macOS versions are no longer supported.

Snag: snippets do not match the stage aspect ratio. This was an issue in earlier versions for unusual stage sizes. The 6.10 update makes snippets fit more reliably. If you still notice misalignment, check that your project stage settings are set to a standard ratio like 16:9 or 4:3 before adding snippets.

Snag: the Map Assistant controls are in a language you do not expect. The 6.10 update localized some of those controls. If you installed the English version and still see German or French text, verify your system language and the app's language setting. The app supports English, German, and French.

Snag: a project synced via iCloud does not show on the iPad. Make sure both devices use the same Apple ID and have iCloud Drive enabled for FotoMagico. Projects stored on iCloud Drive sync between Mac and iPad only if the iPad runs the iPadOS version of FotoMagico. Confirm the iPad app is installed and logged into the same account.

How to install

  1. Mount the disk image and run Open Gatekeeper friendly.
  2. Press Enter in Terminal to bypass Gatekeeper.
  3. Drag the app to the Applications folder.
  4. Open the app when installation is complete.
